Unlike POP3, IMAP4 allows you to store your messages by default on the server, instead of downloading them locally. But an IMAP4 server uses port 143 to listen for messages. IMAP adds many features over POP3 mail standard. It easy to keep several mail clients, all tied to a single account, in sync. When Microsoft Outlook supports the IMAP protocol, its support is not as fluid as it is for the POP3 mail protocol. As of Microsoft Outlook 2010, IMAP support is as fluid as other mail clients, but if you use an earlier version there are a few things you can do to upgrade the performance of IMAP in Outlook.
Following given steps is necessary for configuring Microsoft Outlook support to connect to an Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP4) server.
Step1: Start Outlook-> On the File menu, clicks Info and click Account Settings-> Select Account Settings from the list
Step2: On the E-mail tab, click New and Select Email Account, and then click Next
Step3: Click to select the manually configure server settings or additional server types check box, and then click Next.
Step4: Click Internet E-Mail, and then click Next
Step5: In the Server Information section, select IMAP for Account Type.
Step6: In the Your Name box, enter your name exactly as you want it to appear to recipients.
Step7: In the E-mail Address box, type your e-mail address. Then type username and password
Step8: In the Incoming mail server box, type the name of your IMAP4 server.And In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) box, type the name of your SMTP server.
[Note IMAP4 is a retrieval protocol. You must have SMTP to send your messages.]
Step9: Click next after you have completed entering this configuration information, and then click Finish.
